Boost Your Mood With These Five Foods

Not all foods are created equal. Some have been scientifically proven to lift our spirits. Pick up a couple of these "happy" foods the next time you're at the store and watch your mood improve!

Dark Chocolate

Did you know that chocolate contains "the love drug?" Phenlethylamine is a chemical substance referred to as the love drug because it triggers feelings and emotions like the ones you feel when in love. Another chemical substance found in chocolate is serotonin, which helps to lift your mood. Specialists recommend eating 1-2 ounces a day for mood-lifting benefits. Don't mind if I do.

Vanilla Yogurt

Experts tell us that yogurt makes people happy simply because it tastes better than presumed. When you go in for a spoonful of what you think will be a bland breakfast, the vanilla flavor combined with the tartness of the yogurt creates a sweet and surprisingly delightful taste that catches us off guard. What's more, the mere scent of vanilla appeals to the nervous system to improve our mood, calm the nerves, and even increase positive thinking. Now that's a breakfast worth spooning into.

Nuts

Nuts are packed full of all sorts of beneficial nutrients, including protein, fiber, magnesium, phosphorus, and serotonin. These vitamins helps control our state of mind and positively influence our mood. More specifically, walnuts help improve brain functioning. Our body needs these good vitamins every day, so what better way to get them then throwing back a handful of nuts?

Berries

Berries are more than just a sweet snack—they also produce a chemical that is similar to a prescription grade mood-stabilizing drug. This chemical has been found to help reduce inflammation and anxiety. Eating berries naturally makes us feel more calm and content when we eat them. Not to mention their vibrant colors and delicious taste!

Spinach and Kale

Not only do superfoods like spinach and kale have numerous health benefits, but they have also been proven to help treat depression. That's because they contain folic acid: a chemical that has been verified to lighten your mind and mood. We recommend sautéing them, baking them into one of your favorite dishes, and even putting fresh leaves not your morning smoothie. You can even throw in some of those mood-boosting berries and surprisingly delicious vanilla yogurt for a breakfast smoothie that is sure to get your day starting on a high note.
